Act II September, 2015

Finally, after too long of a wait, Cabaret is returning to the Prince Theater at Broad & Chestnut Streets! The grand opening celebration on Friday, September 18 will feature Karen Mason in “From Beatles to Broadway.” Karen just completed an eight week, sold out performance in New York at Don’t Tell Mama and now she is bringing her show here. The following night, Saturday, September 19, we look forward to Charles Busch. He will be doing two shows, 7 and 9:30PM. Seeing Charles is a rare treat — he’s one of our favorites and we know he will rapidly become one of yours. Charles is the author of many plays including “VAMPIRE LESBIANS OF SODOM,” which won him an Outer Circle Award and a Tony nomination for best play. For more info call 215-422-4580.

ACT 11 PLAYHOUSE. 56 E. BUTLER AVENUE, AMBLER, PA. According to screenwriter William Goldman, the title of Act 11’s latest play refers to one of his own quotes, i.e. “in Hollywood nobody knows anything.” Author Bruce Graham enlarges the scope of this clever remark to include the spouses in a marriage in Graham’s very funny “ACCORDING TO GOLDMAN.” Tony Braithwaite, who has done the Hollywood bit and spent a miserable year at it, stars as a screenwriter-turned-professor who has attempted a comeback in the biz! Meanwhile his long suffering wife (gorgeous, talented Susan Riley Stevens) and his puzzled new student (played by Luke Brahdt) add to the fun, the twist and the turns. Just to make sure that everything turns out alright, direction is by David Bradley. September 8 to October 11. For more information call 215.654.0200.

HEDGEROW THEATRE, 64 ROSE VALLEY ROAD, Rose Valley, PA. Unless you’re even older than we are, you’ve probably never heard of Bulldog Drummond, a pulp fiction character of the 30s who seemed to solve crimes more by accident than skill. Hedgerow’s production of “BULLSHOT CRUMMOND” is a parody of B.D. who was a WWI vet with charm, daring, intelligence and amazing crime solving skills. This variation on a theme was a critically praised 1974 play, which featured a plane crash, a wild car chase. sword fighting, rapid costume changes and actors who played multiple roles with just a flick of a mustache. Directed by Philadelphia actor and director Matt Tallman, Bullshot is played by Brock Vickers while the evil Otto VonBruno is played by Josh Portera and his equally evil mistress (Lenya) by Allison Bloechl. We think Penny may have a hit on her hands. September 3 to October 11. For more information call 610.565.4211.

LANTERN THEATER COMPANY, ST.STEPHEN’S THEATER, 10 th & Ludlow Streets. Writing a first rate play about a serious scientific milestone is an exceptionally difficult task. The script must be accurate, it can’t be a lecture, and it must be filled with dramatic excitement. Playwright Anna Ziegler has obviously succeeded with the local production of “PHOTOGRAPH 51”! During much of the last century science was primarily a man’s game. Women were expected to be competent assistants but rarely regarded as lead creative players. Photograph 51 tells the astonishing story of the race to reveal the structure of DNA. To those of us a little weak in physiology or medicine, the DNA molecule has been called the key to the secret of life. Rosalind Franklin was a young British scientist who produced the first accurate photographic images of the double-helix structure of DNA. This led to fame, fortune and Nobel prizes for three of the men associated with the work but NOTHING for the only woman on the team, Rosalind Franklin. Award winning Kathryn MacMillan directs local favorite Genevieve Perrier in the role of Franklin. September 10 to October 11. For more information call 215.829.0395.

WALNUT STREET THEATRE, 825 WALNUT STREET. What a way to begin Walnut’s 207th season! America’s oldest theater opens with Cole Porter’s “HIGH SOCIETY,” based on a wildly successful film and inspired by “The Philadelphia Story” written by Philip Barry. Tracy Lord is planning her lavish summer wedding when her ex husband appears and tries to win her back. When a charming reporter covers the nuptials he also wants Tracy. Who will the bride choose? If this musical doesn’t make you feel good take your temperature. You may have already passed to the other side. The cast is filled with some of our favorites including the inimitable Grace Gonglewski who plays Tracy’s mother and Ben Dibble who plays one of the suitors. Frank Anzalone directs and every member of this large cast is a gem. The music will be charmingly familiar even if you were too young to see the original play. Performances run from September 8 to October 25. Due to the Pope’s historic visit, transportation in and out of Center City will be extremely limited September 25th to 27th. All performances that weekend have been re-scheduled. For more information call 215.574.3550
