Construction Begins at Former Ortlieb’s Brewery Site

Construction has begun on a new project that will reside at the former location of Ortlieb’s Brewery at the corner of 3rd and Poplar in Northern Liberties. Henry Ortlieb started brewing beer there in the late 1800’s, but the plant was sold to Schmidt’s in the 1970’s. After changing hands a couple of times, the plant shuttered for good in 2000 and was torn down in 2014.

US Construction owns the parcell and have hired JKRP Architects to design the buildings. They developed a plan to create “Ortlieb Square,” a housing development consisting of 18 duplexes and a multi-use commercial building with three apartments above. The development will have a parking lot that can be accessed from American Street.

Naked Philly reports that the developers will likely rent the units for a few years before putting them up for sale. There is currently no word as to what the retail building will house after the project is completed.
