Fairmount’s Bar Hygge Set to Open Soon

Keep your eyes peeled for the newest local tavern.

According to Philadelphia Eater, Bar Hygge is set to open its doors as early as next week. Husband and wife Tom Baker and Peggy Zwerver combined forces with Stew Keener and his partner Julie to create Bar Hygge at 1720 Fairmount Avenue.

The bar derives its name from a Danish word which has no specific English translation. We had to watch this video to stop arguing about the pronunciation.  According to Helen Russell of The Telegraph, though, it means “the absence of anything annoying or emotionally overwhelming; taking pleasure from the presence of gentle, soothing things.” Thus, the name of the bar seeks to invoke a special kind of aura that the togetherness of the establishment will hopefully generate.

Hygge will offer six beverages concocted by owner Tom Baker at Brewery Techne, the brewery within the bar. They will also have on tap four guest beers, draft wine (both red and white) and cocktails.

Chris Galbraith will be the head honcho in Bar Hygge’s kitchen, but we still haven’t seen a menu. According to his LinkedIn, Galbraith is a former executive chef at Greene Grape Provisions in Brooklyn. So, if Bar Hygge is going for delicious meats, cheeses and veggies, we think Galbraith will deliver. The pub will open daily at 4PM.

Tom Baker and his wife Peggy were the masterminds behind Mount Airy’s Earth Bread + Brewery. Their partners Stew and Julie Keener own the Baggataway Tavern in Conshohocken as well.
