Fishtown’s Original Girls Rock Philly

Girls Rock Philly (GRP) is a place for girls to learn more than just playing instruments — they learn how to rock. Located at 1867 Frankford Avenue, this after school program offer various programs to girls who want to play music. Philly.com recently ran a piece on a GRP regular, Marquita Frisby, about her involvement with the group and how it changed her life in a positive way.

The 501(c)(3) non-profit program has been around since 2009 and, according to their Facebook page, is “dedicated to fearless expression, artistic experiment, thoughtful analysis and imaginative action!

GRP is Fishtown based, but any girl is able to join the specialized mentoring program. The opportunities range from after school programs to summer camps and being able to rent and loan gear to rock with.

After school programs include “Band Experience,” which allows girls to build a band, write original songs and get invested in workshops to gain knowledge on writing, music history, techniques and more. They have many options when it comes to lessons for girls of all ages.

Another program operates four days a week, Monday – Thursday, throughout the school year and is for free. Activities vary for the day but range for similar things the girls may do in the Band Experience on a less intense level. More programs can be found here.

You can see what the girls in GRP have been working on at their website, where you can listen to  songs and check out photos of recent performances. GRP’s Facebook has more stories of girls who have been affected by GRP in their music and their lives.

The community can get involved by attending the different events that are posted on their Facebook page regularly, by donating to the organization or by volunteering their time with the program.
