Free Screening of “Girlhood” at KCAPA

As part of their Movies on the Block program, Philadelphia Film Society partnered with Kensington Highschool for the Creative and Performing Arts (KCAPA), Fishtown Neighbors Association, Philadelphia Education Fund and New Kensington Community Development Corporation to present a free screening of the movie “Girlhood” at KCAPA on September 3. The screening is completely free and will take place rain or shine.

Philadelphia Film Society’s Movies on the Block program brings free viewings to Philadelphia residents at established community gathering spaces. The program aims to remove economic, social and geographic barriers through the power of film. They work closely with community leaders to curate films that will be of interest to and resonate with residents.

“Girlhood” is an independent French film that has received rave reviews from both students and teachers. A coming-of-age drama, shy Marienne falls in with a small group of girls after low grades stop her from continuing her studies. Marienne finds herself navigating dangerous waters when confronted with peer pressure, but she soon learns to assert her own voice with a sense of power. The film includes mild language, violence, and suggested drug use.

The screening of the film will be at KCAPA (1901 N Front St.) starting at 6 PM. After the movie there will be a performance by KCAPA Drum Line and Jazz Combo, art-making with The Art Dept. and ArtWell, a Tigers football scrimmage and more community activities and giveaways. Guests are encouraged to bring their own chairs and snacks.
