Guardians of the Galaxy Awesome Mix Dance Party at The Barbary

One week before the much anticipated Marvel superhero movie Guardians of the Galaxy hits the big screens, Riot Nerd and Atomic City Comics will be hosting a Guardians of the Galaxy Awesome Mix Dance Party at the Barbary (951 Frankford Avenue) on Saturday, April 29.

This event is the first of its kind at the Barbary, offering something a bit different from the normal clubbing experience that the venue regularly supplies.

“This is Riot Nerd’s first dance party. We’ve organized several other events like concerts, burlesque and film screenings. We teamed up with Atomic City who also organizes local events including the Star Wars Costumed Dance Party that’s become a really popular annual thing locally,” Megan Hawkey, co-founder and head of marketing and promotions at Riot Nerd told Spirit News. “It’s a unique blend of comic book nerdiness, Marvel movie fandom, cosplay, and usual dance party fun.”

Costumes are encouraged but not required and they don’t have to be Guardians-related. John D, the live galactic space DJ, will be spinning late 70s/early 80s Top 40 radio classics from the film soundtracks and much more. “The coolest thing about it, though, is that the classic 70s/80s AM radio stuff is such a big part of the movies themselves. It really felt like a no brainer,” said Hawkey.

In addition to the four hours of throwback tunes at the hands of DJ John D, there will be a costume contest sponsored by Atomic City Comics and Marvel Studios, who recently got wind the event and wanted to get involved. They will be donating prizes and photographing the costume contest.

“We were really excited to hear from Marvel Studios themselves, who’ll also be donating prizes for the event. Us, our collaborators and contributors are all huge fans of everything they do so getting their official blessing has just been the icing on the cake of what a cool experience putting this whole thing together has been,” Hawkey told Spirit News.

There will also be a dance-off competition sponsored by Art Machine Productions, a raffle benefitting PAWS (Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society), along with a special guest MC, Maki Roll’s Chop Shop.“We are huge animal lovers and we hope to raise a lot of money for local animals in need. PAWS and all of the local businesses that have donated have been really great to work with, super open, giving and enthusiastic, and we really appreciate all the positive energy that’s come our way since the initial announcement [of the event],” said Hawkey.

It seems fitting to honor the new Guardians of the Galaxy movie with a night of cosplay and dance to further build the excitement and anticipation of its release in early May.

“We’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback. A lot of people are excited to dress up, some are excited to enter the dance-off competition, and others are more into the music and dance aspect. That’s the beauty of this event; it can appeal to a lot of different people. Even if you don’t plan to cosplay, it’ll still be cool to come and hang out. The Barbary is a really great spot for an event like this and we plan on doing several in the future,” said Hawkey.

With many prizes to be won and a big turnout predicted, it’s sure to be a fun night.

Doors open at 10PM. Tickets are $5 at the door and $3 if in costume.
