How to Give Back Hyperlocal This #GivingTuesday

With Thanksgiving and a long weekend of credit card swiping coming to a close, it is now time to observe a day for giving. That’s right: Today —Tuesday, December 1, 2015 — is Giving Tuesday.

According to the official Giving Tuesday website, this tradition has been around since 1874. It is a way of getting people aware of how beneficial it is to give back and conduct positive change for others and in their communities.

One of the best things about our communities in the Riverwards is that there are many local opportunities to do just that, no matter if it is today or any day.

Here are a few ways you can give back this Giving Tuesday:

  • Christmas for Our Veterans is a fundraiser where anyone can donate various items to The Spirit Newspaper and The American Legion Auxiliary Elm Tree Post #88 will take them to veterans in the Veteran’s Hospital and the Veteran’s Nursing Home. Items include, body wash, lotion, batteries, scarves, flannels, candy canes, slippers and more which are listed here. The Spirit Newspaper is also taking donations for toddlers, children, teenagers, and women. We will be accepting donations until December 23rd.
  • On Demand Urgent Care (3356 Aramingo Ave.) is running a fundraiser that will continue until December 31, 2015 for their program #THANKS4GIVINGPHILLY. They are accepting donations of clothing, footwear and other winter accessories. Help them reach their goal of 5,000 pounds worth of clothing items.
  • On Thursday, December 3 at 6 PM, there is a yoga class being held at Grace and Glory Yoga Fishtown (2220 Frankford Ave.) to benefit the Friends of Adaire organization. There is a suggested donation of $15 per person. You can sign up for the yoga adventure here. And speaking of yoga, this month they are also starting after-school yoga for kindergarteners. They will be held every Thursday.
  • Friends of Adaire also has a project for a new auditorium, “Raise the Curtain”, where they need to raise $12,000 by July 1, 2016. Funds raised will be matched by Penn Treaty Special Service District. They have successfully raised almost three quarters of the goal and have $3,400 left to raise. Donate here!
  • For different volunteer opportunities, check out Portside Arts Center. They are beginning an art-based literacy just for the month of December and it will kick off this Friday.
  • This Saturday, December 5, 2015 from 8-11PM, with an encouraged $10 donation you can come hang out at a fundraiser being held at The Ukrainian League of Philadelphia (800 N 23rd St.). Spirit News and the Friends of Bache-Martin are holding this event with local live music, sweet food and good vibes. The donations will be equally split between The Spirit’s Kickstarter Campaign and the Bache-Martin School.

Here are just some of the many opportunities the Riverwards have to give back to our community. Don’t be a Scrooge and give back today and all days!
