Kensington Man Convicted in Fatal Street Brawl

Luis “Bebe” Soto was convicted of third-degree murder stemming from a 2013 street brawl where he allegedly fired into a crowd, hitting multiple people and killing 20-year-old Amanda Martinez.

The former drug-gang member insisted at the trial that he was innocent and had watched the shooting happen from afar. According to prosecutors, the fight started when two teen girls started fighting in the intersection of Lee and Somerset. The fight quickly escalated, with an estimated 30 neighbors participating and many more watching from the sidelines.

Sometime during the fight, Soto fired into the crowd, mortally wounding Martinez and hitting three others, Jose Torres, his half-brother, Carl Walden and Larry Robinson. Soto was also convicted on three counts of gun charges and aggravated assault, one for each victim wounded.

The verdict came after a tense trial where witnesses were afraid to give their testimony and the judge collected IDs from courtroom spectators after multiple complaints of intimidating behavior. The two witnesses’ testimonies varied from one another and the original stories that they told police. Prosecutors said this was due to crime’s grip on their lives and neighborhood, but the defense argued that this depiction was incomplete and demeaning.

The jury cleared Soto of a first-degree murder, a charge that would have resulted in automatic life in prison. Carlos Vega, Assistant District Attorney, said that he would seek a maximum punishment of 57 to 114 years at the December 4 sentencing hearing.
