Major Sinkhole Blocks Tulip, Obstructs Huntingdon
A large sinkhole opened up yesterday at the intersection of Tulip and East Huntingdon in Olde Richmond. Crews were called to the scene to look into a possible water main break where they were met with the expanding sinkhole. Work on the sinkhole shut down Tulip Street and partially blocked E. Huntingdon.
Philadelphia Water Department and Philadelphia Gas Works crews both were called to the sinkhole. Water department officials discovered a fault in the 12-inch water main seemed to be causing the problem. PGW workers were needed because a gas line runs under the water main. Crews worked through the night and into Tuesday morning.
