PFCU Mural Winner Announced

After weeks of receiving numerous votes, the winner has been announced for the Philadelphia Federal Credit Union (PFCU) and the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program’s design contest. According to the PFCU’s website, Brad Carney and Jeff Kilpatrick’s design has been chosen by the public to be displayed along the wall of A C Auto Body overlooking East Dauphin Street and Frankford Avenue. The local artists are overjoyed with the opportunity to give their piece to the neighborhoods of Fishtown and East Kensington. The mural will be unveiled in the spring during the Philadelphia Federal Credit Union Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby & Arts Festival.

The two artists have known each other for about fifteen years but this was Kilpatrick’s first time working on a mural. In regards to coming up with the design Kilpatrick said, “It was pretty easy to compromise on the styles.” After they became finalists the waiting game began. Once the number of votes was taken off PFCU’s Facebook page it was anyone’s guess as to which design would win.

“I texted my wife,” Kilpatrick said when he found out about his win with Carney. As mentioned in our previous article, Kilpatrick grew up in Fishtown, and knowing that the piece he and Carney created will be shown in the neighborhood he grew up in, he said, “Never thought I would have the opportunity to leave something like this behind.”

However, the community is not done participating in this project. In 2016 there will be paint days announced where members of the community can sign up to help complete the newest mural in town.
