St. Laurentius Billboard Welcomes Pope Francis to Visit Fishtown Church

Anyone driving southbound on I-95  will see a new billboard standing by the exit for Allegheny Avenue.

St. Laurentius Billbaord

The ad “welcomes” Pope Francis to come visit St. Laurentius, a church that the Vatican described as an “an example of urban blight” earlier this year. The billboard was sponsored by the people of St. Laurentius Church and Save Saint Laurentius. The Pontiff will be visiting the City of Brotherly love during the weekend of September 26-27.

Pope Francis’ itinerary doesn’t have him scheduled to visit Fishtown, or anywhere in the Riverwards for that matter. Instead he’ll be keeping to areas in Old City, Center City and the Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility in the Northeast. His complete schedule can be found here.

It’s a bold thing to do, asking the leader of one of the most powerful institutions in the world to visit a “blighted” area chock-full of coffee shops, boutiques, Primo Hoagies, and great neighbors. But if he does decide to make a detour to Memphis and Berks Streets, you know Spirit News will be there to cover it. We just honestly doubt it. But hey, if Frankie wants to come by, we’ll show him a good time, grab an Americano at ReAnimator, a soft pretzel from Furfari’s and see what he thinks about the structural integrity of St. Laurentius. There are lots of people here dying to know.
