The Mystery Of The Misfit Tree In NoLibs
Back in 2011, there was a random tree growing in the middle of the “street” on the 800-block of Leithgow Street, as discovered by Naked Philly during a period of new construction nearby in Northern Liberties.
Apparently, the hipster vibe with lumbersexual fad in the neighborhood also welcomed a Mr. Paul Bunyan, because the tree—along with much of the surrounding pavement—has been uprooted.
Naked Philly notes that Leithgow Street here is somewhat of a secluded island—accessible only by a left off of Lawrence Street, or straight from Reno Street. Both latter streets have received some developmental upgrades in the last few years, which leaves us all wondering why Leithgow remains loveless.
There is some cobblestone left on the southern end of the block, but the rest of the street looks like the most suitable location in Philadelphia for a parade of pigs. Sure, the tree is gone, but there was some charm to its presence. Why cut the tree down and still leave most of the street as a mud pit? Sounds like a lose-lose here.
Neighbors in the area have been calling about getting the street paved, but their cries have so far fallen upon deaf ears. Here’s hoping the city can act, or that residents and visitors of Leithgow Street have dependable four-wheel drive.
Rest in peace, misfit tree.
