Water Department Sponsoring Upcoming Rain Check Workshop at Fishtown Library Next Month

On Saturday, February 18th, the Fishtown branch of the Free Library of Philadelphia will be hosting a workshop sponsored by the Philadelphia Water Department (PWD) from 2PM – 3:30PM. The workshop will promote the PWD’s Rain Check program and provide local residents the opportunity to receive stormwater products and services for free or at heavily discounted prices.

“The upcoming workshop at the Fishtown Library provides a great opportunity for those who want to get a jump on spring landscaping projects,” said Jeanne Waldowski, PWD’s Rain Check manager.

Rain Check is offering winter-workshop attendees two incentives to encourage them to come out before busy season. Each month from now until February, one person will be randomly selected to receive a free rain barrel. All you have to do to be eligible is attend one of the winter workshops. The winners can choose one of three designs for their rain barrels created by local student artists and members of the Mural Arts Program. Participants who persuade family members and friends to attend one of the workshops from now until February 20 will also be eligible to win two free tickets to the Philadelphia Flower Show. Simply ask the person or people you referred to the program to mention your name upon registration.

Rain Check has helped more than 3,000 local residents manage stormwater runoff by providing quality products and services. Its participants have saved almost $300,000 on said products and services since the program’s establishment in June 2012. Rain Check is funded by the PWD and managed by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and the Sustainable Business Network of Greater Philadelphia.

“I think [these products] are great,” said Northern Liberties resident Erick Guerra. “It’s a better use of water, and it’s pretty affordable. They’re nice. They’re really nicely done.”
