Penn Herb Co. Re-Opens Its Doors After Three Years Away From Northern Liberties

After a few years away from the neighborhood, The Penn Herb Co. — a shop specializing in vitamins, herbs and natural remedies — is set to re-open in Northern Liberties.

The Penn Herb Co. was originally founded in 1924, sold to the Betz family in 1962 and has been looked after by three generation of Betz men ever since. Occupying a retail space on 2nd and Green St. for the majority of the past century, the family closed down the brick and mortar storefront in 2012 to concentrate their efforts online.

Now, three years later, the company has re-opened with a store that is quadruple the size of the original. It occupies the bottom floor of the new Liberty Gateways building at 601 N. 2nd Street. Along with this retail space, the building will also feature 14 apartment units. The construction of Liberty Gateways took longer than expected but now both the store and the apartments are a part of the Northern Liberties landscape.

Betz Jr., 59 told Philly.com,

What I really wanted to accomplish is a brand new store and have other people pay for the building.

The herbal remedies store is more than vitamins and extracts. The new 8,000-square-foot store offers food as well as informative kiosques about its products. There are plans to add a coffee and tea bar next year. The family owned business has grown with the neighborhood and is adapting to the changes with gusto and ambition.
