Manny Pacquiao’s unanimous victory over Chris Algieri wasn’t the only boxing match of importance this weekend– at the Thanksgiving Turkey Brawl on Sat., November 22, ten bouts of three rounds each were fought between neighborhood guys at the Front Street Gym (2076 E. Clearfield St.).
Competing boxers included: Kerry Judge, Ron Buck, Jerry Cullen, Hank Quinn, Frank Cerne, Dr. Ray Bobb, Shawn Mcarf, Sonny H., Fred Druding Jr., Tug Ku Bach, Eddie Flynn and Norman Torey.
Even “Rocky” stepped into the ring for a fight but was disqualified and abruptly left before comment. I asked his opponent if the theatrics were planned:
“Absolutely not, I just wanted a good clean fight,” he said.
“We couldn’t do this last year because of my health problems, but i’m glad we could do it again this year,” Frank Kubalch, the gym’s director, said. “It’s for a good cause and we have a lot of fun doing it. Also, make sure you put in the paper that this gym wouldn’t be possible without the support of the Local 30. Whenever we are going through hard times they always come through for us.”
