Artist: Would You Like To Paint a Mural in Kensington?

Are you a muralist currently residing in the Riverwards? If so, you could be the next one chosen by residents to create wall art that will adorn a local business. How’s that for keeping it in the family?

The Philadelphia Federal Credit Union (PFCU), whose local branch is located on 2136 E. Dauphin Street, is collaborating with the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program (Mural Arts) to find a local muralist to celebrate an original voice within its East Kensington/Fishtown neighborhood. Additionally, this is an important partnership that will help bring a fresh perspective to Mural Arts’ ever-growing outdoor gallery of public artworks.

“This is a great opportunity for new artists to work within Fishtown,” Leslie Lodwick, project manager for Mural Arts, said.  “We really [wanted to use this project] to tap into those amazing artists [who live here].”

Ultimately, the artist chosen will produce a mural that will celebrate the unique character of the neighborhood, raise the profile of this area’s growing arts and culture communities and raise awareness of financial literary and resources available to the arts community, neighborhood residents and business owners.

Based on artist applications received, PFCU will narrow it down to three finalists and will then open it up to the public to vote for and determine the winning design for the mural, which will be announced the in mid-October.  The community will continue to have opportunities to be engaged in the mural-making process through the winter and into next spring during community paint days, where residents can actually help to paint and fill in the mural.

The deadline for muralists’ submission is July 31st and three finalists will be selected on August 6th. Final designs will be due on September 21st and design exhibition at PFCU and community voting will take place from September 28th through October 12th. Final selection will be announced during the week of October 19th.

The Mural’s dedication will happen at the 2016 Philadelphia Federal Credit Union Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby & Arts Festival, of which PFCU is a the title sponsor.
