How to Improve Frankford Ave

Frankford Avenue is the heart of Fishtown’s resurgence as one of the hottest and most rapidly-developing neighborhoods in Philadelphia. It’s home to a number of businesses that are frequented by pedestrians from Fishtown and other neighboring ‘hoods, but there is a unique challenge facing these sidewalk-pounders: There are no legal crossings on Frankford Avenue in between Girard and Palmer. This makes crossing the street from businesses like Jinxed to Frankford Hall either lengthy and roundabout if you chose to cross legally or dangerous if you choose to cross illegally.

Conrad Benner, Fishtown local and founder and editor of StreetsDept.com, shared some thoughts on how the stretch could be improved for pedestrian safety. He thinks that stop signs should be installed at intersections or at least button-activated crosswalks so that people can cross without worrying about traffic. He also raises the point that Frankford Avenue is a state route that would require the cooperation of PENNDOT if any improvements are going to be put in place.
