KCAPA Students Tell Their Stories and Challenge Stereotypes Through Public Art

Students at Kensington CAPA have been working for months on a series of poems, essays, videos and photographs that try to tackle the complicated issue of teen identity. Pieces from the project, called “What’s Your Story?,” are now hanging in eight different places in Kensington.

“When you see the silhouette, you see the outline of the person, but you don’t really know the real story behind the person,” said junior Natasha Feliciano

The pieces each strive to challenge a stereotype that is often associated with people their age. Many of the pieces feature a simple black silhouette with a short statement challenging a stereotype that has been placed upon them. The silhouette represents the stereotype, as you can’t see the full picture clearly. Students tried to write about a stereotype that they have been impacted by during their lifetime, such as the idea that teenage mothers are failures. Look out for the thought-provoking series during your daily travels! They’re all pretty big and hard to miss!
