Music Row: Queen of Jeans NoLibs Residency Starts Tonight!

Fans of lush, old-school female harmonies with spring reverb guitars will love Philly’s Queen of Jeans. Having formed a little over a year ago, this local band is off to a tremendous start and will be featured as the resident artists at Bourbon and Branch in Northern Liberties this month. Queen of Jeans will be performing every Friday starting May 6th.queen of jeans

Queen of Jeans was founded by Miriam Devora, Matheson Glass and Nina Scotto, with the recent addition of Patrick Wall on drums. Their debut self-titled EP is a quirky mix of indie pop and rich harmonies that can sooth even the most restless soul. The EP is now available through Third Uncle Records.

The record’s opening track is aptly titled “Dance (Get Off Your Ass)” and sets up the vibe of the EP well. During the video for the song, one might find themself reminiscing of what it’s like to truly listen to music on headphones; a personal and absorbing experience that, in the case of Queen of Jeans, is accompanied by dancing throughout the city. Other songs on the record, such as “Get You”, remain achingly sweet and honest.

Queen of Jeans also recently put out another music video — a cover of The Bangles’ classic hit “Walk Like an Egyptian.” Not many bands can pull off a music video starring their moms, but Queen of Jeans managed to do it in a totally awesome way. In the video, members of the band are replaced by their mothers who pick up the instruments and jam along to the band’s rendition of the 80s smash hit. Queen of Jeans told me that “making [the video] was the most fun we’ve had as a band or as people.” Their music, just like their videos, is endearing. It’s playful and has that warm, fuzzy retro sound to it.

You can check out Queen of Jeans at Bourbon and Branch (705 N 2nd St.) this month. You may want to consider pre-gaming with roller skates and milk shakes.
