Riverwards Development News (December 14, 2016)

Fishtown

On Tuesday, December 6th, developer Roland Kassis took a slightly modified version of the design of a boutique hotel he plans to construct at 1224 Frankford Avenue to the Fishtown Neighbors Association meeting. The basic plan remains the same, with one unique alteration: the rooftop pool will hang six feet over the side of the building above Leopard Street. At the zoning meeting, the local votes was 8 yes, 1 no, while the community vote went 13 yes, 2 no. In total, the community supported the variance, 21-3.

On Friday, December 9th, Weckerly’s Ice Cream opened a new shop at 9 West Girard Avenue. They offered those in attendance beer from St. Benjamin Brewing Company and cheese from Birchrun Hills and Valley Milkhouse. Weckerly’s will be open until 9PM on weekdays and until 10PM on weekends.

Several weeks ago, crosswalks and stop signs were added to the unusual intersection at Frankford Avenue and Thompson and Shackamaxon Streets. Established in 2015, the Fishtown Neighbors Association Safety Committee played an integral role in improving the hazardous conditions of the whacky intersection. The committee will reassemble in January and discuss several other neighborhood-safety issues.
