Sour Beer Tastings, Art Shows, Chocolate and Sustainability Classes: First Friday Rundown for June 3rd


First Friday is here, and the rain should clear out by the time shows get underway. Here are a few events to help you get your evening started:

Bottle Bar East at 1308 Frankford Avenue will be hosting Philly Beer Week’s Sour Event. The festivities will begin at noon. Jazz music will commence at 7PM. More than 16 sours will be available on tap. Visit the Bottle Bar East’s official website here.

Kensington Quarters (right next door to the Bottle Bar East) will be hosting an exhibit featuring the oil paintings of Gina Hoover. A pop-up wine bar will also be open on the second floor from 5PM – 11PM. Visit Kensington Quarter’s official website here.

Front Street Cafe at 1253 North Front Street will be hosting Edge City Art from 5PM – 7PM tomorrow night. EslowArt, JMeyer and Roza Money will showcase their collections. Smaller replicas of the featured artwork will be available. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to a farming program that provides youth agricultural knowhow and donates harvested crops to the community. Learn more about the program here. TOILE, a clothing store at 1333 Frankford Avenue, will be hosting Dapper Dames from 7PM – 10PM tomorrow night. The exhibition will include Wax Poetic Clothing and KD Chic. Wax Poetic Clothing is an American-made brand of clothing, the latest collection of which features nautical-themed attire. KD Chic is a new line of hats created by Krista Dresbach. The Lutheran Settlement House at 1340 Frankford Avenue will be hosting Sustainability First Friday to address environmental issues and concerns. Kensington Quarters, teens in the after-school program and the Senior Center will provide food, beverages and baked goods respectively. Some of the participating organizations include the Clean Air Council, the Franklin Institute and the Philadelphia Water Department (PWD). Gryphon Cafe at 100 West Oxford Street will be hosting Equal Exchange’s free chocolate tasting and presentation from 6PM – 8PM. Free samples will be available to the public. Equal Exchange will also discuss fair trade and the bean-to-bar process of chocolate manufacturing. Photographer Dave Christenson will showcase some of his work as well. The Art Dept. at 1638 East Berks Street will be hosting an exhibition featuring the work of Philadelphia-based artist Emily Royer. Royer has showcased her art at various local galleries and schools. Her work has recently been featured in an issue of Fresh Paint Magazine. Visit the Art Dept.’s official website here.

Jerry’s Bar at 129 W. Laurel Street in Northern Liberties will be showcasing original work from local artists. This month’s show features Jarred Cohen and his exhibit, “Material Engagemnets.” Things kick off at 9PM and go until midnight.
