We here at The Spirit are excited to announce that we are holding an Upcycling Contest! What’s upcycling? Upcycling is reusing materials or objects in a way that creates something of higher value, whether it’s a useful tool, a handy time-saving gadget or simply something pretty.

It makes us sad to see our newspaper in recycling bins, so we are asking our readers to come up with creative ways to repurpose old issues. Our Upcycle Throwdown is a challenge to come up with the best ways to upcycle our paper, with no limitations on what the final product can be. As long as it’s predominately made out of The Spirit, you’re good.

Prizes will be available for the top three pieces, and include free art classes at Portside Arts Center and Philly Home Brew  as well as gift certificates to various local institutions.

To enter, email info@spiritnews.org with “Upcycle Throwdown” as the subject and your name and phone number in the body of the email. You can also call our office at (215)423-6246 to enter. The deadline for submissions is October 17.

Good luck and have fun! We can’t wait to see what you come up with!
