What Our Staff Is Watching on Netflix and Why

Today, I asked our staff on Slack, our internal communication system, what they were watching on Netflix and why. Here are their responses and recommendations. This is the first of our monthly staff recommendations for movies, music, entertainment and what not.

Ben:

Parks and Recreation is the best television show on Netflix. I wish Pawnee was real and I could live there.

Ptah:

Hot Girls Wanted. It’s a documentary about “girl next door” type porn stars. The producers shack them up in houses with  guys who are basically their handler. He brings them to and from the shoots and lives with them. The documentary follows a few around and highlights their daily lives. There’s no nudity…sorry.

Bob:

I saw something on Netflix, like, two years ago and it sucked. I don’t remember the name or who was in it but there was, like, murders, a dead car battery, it was set deep in the woods, a think there was a radio tower that the characters needed to climb up to contact people (probably for jumper cables). The best part was it sufficiently sucked enough to be able to enjoy making fun of it as we watched. I don’t need Netflix to find shitty movies so I don’t bother with it.

Max:

I’m a big fan of Gangland on Netflix. I like watching criminals get caught so I know what not to do when planing my next heist/fraud/racket. I also like watching Lock Up when trying to fall asleep at night. Something about solitary confinement is so soothing to me.

Matt:

Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon. It’s the story of Alice Cooper’s manager and it was directed by Austin Powers (Mike Myers), but that makes it sound boring. One of the first stories Shep tells in the documentary is about him tripping balls trying to break up what he thought was a rape happening poolside at the motel he’s crashing in. He knocks the dude off of the woman, the woman stands up and punches Shep. He finds out the next morning the dude he tackled was Jimi Hendrix and the woman who punched him  was Janis Joplin.

Megan:

Wetlands. A story about a young tomboy in Germany with an interesting take on hygiene and sexuality. This is not a movie for the squeamish…or those who don’t like reading subtitles. As for her short hair, baggy clothes, I don’t give a fuck attitude, she is successful sexually. She uses her smegma as perfume and purposefully rubs her vagina on toilets just to prove to her mother that vaginal hygiene is mostly superstition. She lands herself in the hospital after a shaving accident and falls in love with a male nurse while trying to reunite her parents. It’s pretty vulgar, but it’s charming.

Chris:

Mad Men. Cigarettes, money, drinks before noon. Don Draper is a goddamn genius. The evolution of the show and characters, the historicity of the show—everything about it keeps me wanting more.

Joshua:

Virunga:

It encompasses everything that is fascinating. The documentary follows four characters fighting to to save Virunga National Park, home of the last remaining sects of mountain gorillas in the Democratic Republic of Congo. I also have a crush on the journalist in the film, Mélanie Gouby. Sue me.
