A New Place to Drink is Opening in Kensington… And It’s Not a Brewery

If constantly visiting breweries has begun to bore you, new drinking opportunities are coming your way this fall with the opening of Original 13 Ciderworks in Kensington at 1526 North American Street.Original 13 Ciderworks

Original 13 will be serving cider, mead, traditional wine and pear wine. Due to state and federal laws regulating alcohol production, all beverages produced at Original 13 must have an ABV over 5.5 percent.

Original 13 will also be producing drinks with a local touch, like a possible blueberry cider made with fresh New Jersey berries and other beverages made with fruit from PA.

For environmentally-conscious socialites, Original 13 is also listed as a B-corporation, meaning they have met “rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency.”

Original 13 is not predicted to open until October. The company, which was named in honor of the original 13 colonies and the founders’ love for hard apple cider, is still dealing with technicalities, as its federal licenses have not arrived yet and its application for a grant from Philadelphia Commerce Department has not been accepted yet.

However, John Kowchak, president of Original 13, is determined to add this new landmark to Philadelphia’s drinking culture.

“This is Philly, and we’re gonna do things like they’re done in Philly,” Kowchak said to Philly Mag.
