Bacterial Meningitis: Local High School Student Dies After Contracting Infection

According to NBC10, a Philadelphia high school student died from a case of bacterial meningitis Tuesday morning.

The 9th grade student, who has not yet been identified, attended George Washington Carver High School. School officials organized a meeting Wednesday evening at the school to help address the concerns of parents. In addition, the School District’s Emergency/Crisis Response Team is bringing in trained professionals to help counsel grieving classmates and staff.

The Philadelphia Department of Public Health is also monitoring the situation, which is the first documented meningitis fatality in the city this year. Common symptoms of meningitis include nausea, vomiting, headache, fever, and stiff neck. Meningitis is not typically deadly, and Dr. Stacey A. Gorski of the University of Pennsylvania said that being fully vaccinated will ensure you’re protected and that it’s most often those who are immunocompromised who are at risk.
