According to Philly.com, earlier this month, a snug new brewpub opened on Fairmount Avenue. Bar Hygge (1720 Fairmount Ave.) is the cozy new new labor of love from Earth Bread + Brewery’s Tom Baker and Peggy Zwerver, and Stew and Julie Keener of Baggataway Tavern in West Conshohocken.
Bar Hygge’s wooden features and spacious seating are a product of CANNOdesign’s interior plan. The bar has a vestibule like a lounge, warm lighting and both high-top and banquet seating options, overlooked by barrel staves. The atmosphere mirrors the name: Hygge is a danish word whose meaning is complex, but can be likened to cosiness and the feeling of warmth and happiness.
Six original beers, created in Hygge’s ten barrel brewery, Brewery Techne, are served alongside four outside beers and four wines, which are kept on tap. Original beers include “Grinding Grooves, a Gotlandsdricka with smoked malt and a full juniper bush, H.O.P., a pale ale dry-hopped with amarillo; a Belgian pale ale called Meme; a Baltic porter with balsamic called Alchemy; a saison brune with rye and caraway called Izzy Brown Ale; and a Scottish ale called “Doon the Watter.”
Chef Chris Galbraith offers appetizer-sized plates that can be combined to create custom share-size dishes as well as more straightforward fare, like roast chicken breast, braised short rib, herbed spaetzle resembling mac and cheese, a grass-fed beef burger and the recently added oxtail osso bucco.
The bar is open every night and will soon offer brunch.
