Forget the Oscars, Check Out the A”cat”emy Awards and Adoptable Pets at the PSPCA This Weekend!

The Pennsylvania SPCA (PSPCA) will be holding an A”cat”emy Awards and Red Car”pit” celebration this Saturday and Sunday from 12 to 6 PM in honor of the Oscars this weekend.

The event is designed to spotlight adult cats and pit bull-type dogs up for adoption. All animals showcased are available to take home with a donation.

Gillian Kocher, director of public relations for the PSPCA, said the event is a way to get visitors in the door to adopt animals usually overlooked.

“We are waiving adoption fees in an effort to get people in the door to visit the animals in our care,” Kocher said. “We focused on pit bull-type dogs, as well as adult cats because they can be harder to place at times. We know that these animals have a lot of love to give, and we want to make sure they are given every opportunity to experience love in return.”

The adoption center will be decorated in honor of the Oscars theme with film strips, an inflatable Oscar and an animal-friendly red carpet. Pictures of the adopted animals with their new “forever families” can be anticipated to be taken on the red carpet as a form of “star treatment.”

The main focus of the event is, of course, the animals.

“We really feel that animals are the stars of many people’s lives… These animals are all unique and just like people, have their own unique characteristics. We want to make sure their next role is that of an owned pet rather than a shelter animal,” Kocher said.

Despite the waived adoption fees, interested owners would still need to go through the adoption process. This includes photo identification, proof of address and filling out an adoption application.

More detail about the adoption process can be found here.

You can visit either the PSPCA’s headquarters (350 E. Erie Avenue) or the Fishtown location (1546 Frankford Avenue) to take part in the festivities.
