Heffe: Taco’s That Definitely Don’t Suck

Peter McAndrews — the mastermind behind two Riverward favorites, Modo Mio and Paesano’s — just opened his new taco joint Heffe on the corner of Frankord Avenue and Marlborough Street. Heffe is a play on the Spanish word “jefe,” which means boss. According to Philly.com, the spelling of the name with an “H” was chosen to avoid any confusion with pronunciation (we found that it only confused our Google searches).

Heffe’s tagline is “Taco’s [sic] that don’t suck!” and these tacos definitely don’t suck. The Spirit decided to eat lunch there today. The menu is everything you might expect from McAndrew’s anything-but-boring approach to food. Check it out:

The Kraken: fried octopus, mexican cheese, chimichurri, spicy tomato jam and queso fresco is sure to be the menu’s most sought after taco. With options like the Pole Yo and the Fatman, we think the new taco shack will be a hit with the neighborhood. We were a little upset they had already run out of the Menudo, their self-described hangover cure, but we’re sure that we will find another day the soup will be needed.

More than two-dozen customers waited patiently as the shack churned out its new brand of tacos and burritos.

Heffe joins the ranks of Riverward’s taco destinations like El Camino Real, Taco Riendo and Loco Pez (and those mom-style tacos at Orteleib’s). Some might think that there isn’t room for another taco joint, but we think we could always use another option, especially one that does it a little differently.
