Holiday Season’s Hottest Toy at Center of Armed Robbery in Olde Richmond

Almost two decades ago, Tickle Me Elmo was the most popular toy of the 1996 holiday season. The doll’s infamous rise to the top of Christmas lists across the country was noteworthy, causing shoppers to turn vicious, inspiring it’s own black market and sparking a scandal involving one of New York’s most infamous mob families. Now, the hottest toy of the 2015 holiday season, the hoverboard (which doesn’t even actually hover), is in headlines for sparking some criminal activity of its own.

Philly Voice reported that a hoverboard was stolen in an armed robbery in Olde Richmond around 6PM on January 3 near the 2500 block of Almond Street. Three juveniles, all boys, approached the victim from the other side of the street while she was riding on her hoverboard. After a gun was pointed at her the victim handed her hoverboard to the three boys. The victim chose not to report the crime.

On January 7, fours days after the armed robbery, an altercation drew the attention of the police on the 100 block of W. Montgomery Avenue in South Kensington. According to Philly Voice the fight was between the juveniles involved in the hoverboard theft, two of the boys were arrested in connection to the crime.

The stolen hoverboard was recovered and returned. The juveniles were also in possession of a BB gun. Authorities said the two boys were wanted in another armed robbery as well.
