Kensington Community Food Co-op Hosts Monthly Marketplace Event

In case you missed it Tuesday night, the Kensington Community Food Co-op (KCFC) held their monthly Marketplace event at the Circle of Hope church at 2009 Frankford Ave.

Millenials, do you remember elementary school book sales around holiday time—walking around with your typed-up order form and scratching off the number “1” for the book or stationery you wanted to get your parents (or if rich or spoiled, yourself)? That’s how members and non-members alike could shop at the marketplace for foods from coffee beans to popcorn, from freshly harvested asparagus to jars of cider applesauce.

Local customers came in—as they do every fourth Tuesday of the month—to purchase from bulk bins of organic, fresh vegetables and jarred goods, both locally and regionally sourced. KCFC board members and volunteers stood over the wares, dishing them into recycled yogurt containers and plastic shopping bags.

Customers wouldn’t want it any other way, as KCFC continues to build its membership base.

“My husband and I come to all of the Marketplace events,” said Fishtown-resident Emily Glover, 33, whose involvement with KCFC stretches back to 2009. “It’s always exciting to walk into Marketplace on a Tuesday, and you see a lot of old and new friends. It seems as though new members of the co-op are always emerging.”

With over 600 members and investors, KCFC hopes to open its doors as a fully functional supermarket at 2670 Coral St., sometime in 2016.
