Kensington Urban Closing to be Postponed One Year

District officials announced Tuesday that the merger of Kensington Urban Education High School and Kensington International Business High School will be postponed by one year in order to keep the community in the loop on the planning process for the change.

Back in April, dozens of students protested the closing of Kensington Urban, one of their main arguments being the lack of notice and communication from the district.

In an article for The Notebook, students and parents considered the postponement a “partial victory,” with the acknowledgement that they will be listened to, moving forward.

The schools will share a principal and assistant principal in the coming academic year, but the students will stay enrolled in their respective, individual schools.

“We’re happy they went back on their decision [to consolidate immediately],” student Essence Whiting told The Notebook. “But it is still a pressing matter and a threat. We will keep pressing forward and keep fighting not to merge the schools and urge community schools.”
