Penn Treaty Middle School Celebrates Spirit Field Day

On May 24, 2012 Penn Treaty Middle School held its first annual Spirit Field Day at Fishtown’s own, Hetzell’s Field (many thanks to Arty Dolan).  Aside from a late afternoon thunderstorm, the weather held up and we had a fun-filled, smooth sailing day.  The weeks before were spent gathering ideas on how to build student moral.   Faculty and staff wanted to end the busy academic year with an event that involved all students.  Hence, Field Day was developed.  The participation was to be on a level that included sportsmanship, team building, and the creation of a positive atmosphere.  A team of staff developed a Field Day action plan with all in mind.  Stations were created to move students through the field in a structured, yet vitalizing way.  Stations consisted of Minute to Win It games, Toilet Paper Toss, Relay Races, Cross Fit Prime Obstacle Courses, Zumba, Kickball, Face Painting as well as the Snack Stand and First Aid Tent.  Long time residents, Mr. and Mrs. Shank of the 1300 block of Columbia Avenue, opened up their house for necessary emergencies and provided access to water to refill our coolers.    The day ended with a faculty/student softball game where 8th graders dared to play their teachers – all while the Eat Right Program provided frozen fruit bars to all that attended the event.

Penn Treaty students sometimes leave a lasting impression on neighbors that may not always be a positive one.  Penn Treaty’s First Annual Field Day proved to be a huge and overwhelming success.  We moved through the neighborhood throughout the day and kept Hetzell’s Field clean and in tact.  The overall atmosphere of the day was nothing more than an affirmation that Penn Treaty’s students and staff are a positive asset to the School District of Philadelphia and the neighborhood it serves.
