Port Richmond’s Own Jekyll and Hyde: Billy “Black” Clayberger

Billy Black doesn’t know what job he gets roughed up at more—wrestling as his alter ego “Manthing” at DWF/Loco Professional Wrestling, or at the sandwich board at Andy’s Deli (3859 Aramingo Avenue) building hoagies and steak sandwiches with the razor-sharp-tongued waitresses and take-no-prisoners cook staff. So even though he gets choked, bodyslammed, clotheslined and sometimes even smashed over the head with a metal chair, maybe you should still put your money on the crew at Andy’s.

Black’s real name is Billy Clayberger and he’s Port Richmond born and raised, attending Our Lady Help of Christians School as a kid and then going on to Frankford High School. He was hanging out at Samuel’s Rec Center one night and there was an exhibition wrestling match in the gym, complete with ring, musclehead characters, and over-the-top storylines with plenty of hard-hitting action. Clayberger was hooked and knew that’s what he wanted to get into.

Just like Christy Brinkley had the look for modeling, Clayberger had the look of a wrestler. Towering well over 6 feet and with a bulk over 200 pounds, he takes over the ring as “Manthing”: a chainsaw-wielding psycho wearing a leather mask. No wonder he’s a crowd favorite. He’s put in his time with Doc Diamond’s Devastation University, a pro wrestling organization with a state-of-the-art training center based in Pennsauken, NJ, and continues to be on the card at DWF/Loco Wrestling events throughout the region.

The next wrestling event, billed as a “Total Respect Legends Show”, will be on Saturday, January 26 at the Sports Plex in Feasterville, PA, just minutes from the I-95 Street Road exit. Remember Jimmy ”The Superfly” Snuka? What about superstar wrestling legend The Russian Nikolai Volkoff? Those are the guys on the fight card at this event, as well as dozens of Doc Diamond’s up and comers who bring some fresh blood and guts into the ring.

Clayberger loves events like this one where wrestling legends that he grew up following share the same ring with him and his co-wrestlers. “In some sports and businesses, people are selfish and don’t share their knowledge, don’t teach, don’t mentor, it’s one big rat race,” said Clayberger. “But you have these guys who want to train and teach the younger guys like me, who want to make us better wrestlers and athletes—you have to respect that.”

And you have to respect what Clayberger does outside the ring as well. When he’s not building your sandwich at Andy’s Deli, he’s the assistant head cook at Variety Club Children’s Charities. A very big guy, with a very big heart, who happens to carry a very big, loud chainsaw. Clayberger wants to bring wrestling expos back to the neighborhoods and Rec Centers in Philly and knows the kids will love it, just like he did back when he was a kid.

Tickets for the wrestling event on January 26 can be bought at Andy’s Deli, 3859 Aramingo Avenue, for $10 in advance or at the door at The Sports Plex for $15.
