SRC Approves Sale of Two Riverwards Schools

The Philadelphia School Reform Commission approved the sale of two Riverwards schools on Thursday, August 20. The SRC is selling Willard Elementary School in Kensington to the nonprofit Project HOME for $400,000. Sheridan West Academy in Harrowgate will be sold to developer GM Holdings for $600,000. Both schools were shuttered in 2013. District Spokesman Fernando Gallard was happy that the district could benefit in some way. He said in an article:

We’re very happy to say that those are two vacant properties that are no longer going to be part of our list of vacant properties of the school district.

The sale of these two schools added to the district’s profits from real estate sales, which now totals over $40 million. The district has sold 12 properties since they closed more than two dozen schools in the spring of 2013.
