The Unsolved Murder of Amber Long

Two years of investigation and nothing to show.

On January 19, 2014, 26-year-old architect Amber Long and her mother Stephanie were walking to their car on the 900 block of North Front Street in Northern Liberties when two men approached them from behind and attempted to swipe the women’s purses. Stephanie quickly submitted; Amber, however, resisted the thief, who immediately drew a .22 caliber pistol and shot her in the midsection.

The attackers fled to their nearby rented Chevy Impala as Amber fell into her mother’s arms and died. Two years have since elapsed and the murder remains unsolved.

“We have a couple different people through tips that we’re looking at, we’re doing background on,” Philadelphia Police Captain James Clark told ABC Action News. “But right now [the evidence is] not strong enough for us to say we have a person of interest.”

Fred Florian, a retired police officer, and his wife Suzanne walk by the scene of the crime every day.

“I feel so bad for the mother and the whole family,” Suzanne told Action News. “And she was so young and so talented, and to be gone like that in an instant [is] such a shame.”

Philadelphia University, Long’s alma mater, has set up a scholarship in her honor, the funding of which has already exceeded more than $30,000.

A $47,000 reward is being offered to anyone with substantial evidence regarding the case. Police officials are strongly exhorting members of the public to come forward with any information that could be useful in helping to solve Amber’s murder.
