Two of the Riverward’s Favorite Food Stops Are Expanding Out of the Neighborhood

According to Philly.com, two well known Riverwards restaurants, Loco Pez and Helm, have plans to expand their businesses and open South Philly locations in the near future.

Loco Pez (2401 E. Norris Street) in Fishtown will open a second location at the corner of 20th and Bainbridge Street in a space that was previously home to Robert’s Twi-Lite Lounge.

Plans for Loco Pez owner Joe Beckham to take over Robert’s Twi-Lite Lounge were confirmed in August 2015 by Foobooz. At that time, Beckham and his partners were not sure what the exact use of the space would be.

“The bar is a one-story cinderblock building with a long bar and arched openings for storing alcohol. Like Loco Pez before it was renovated, it’s a dive bar with some character,” the Foobooz article said.

Beckham told Philly.com a second story will be added to the building. The second location is predicted to be open in early summer.

Helm (1303 North 5th Street) in South Kensington will also be opening a second location named Helm South. The new eatery will be found at Front and Morris Streets in a building previously occupied by 1st Ward Sandwiches.

According to Helm’s website, chefs Kevin D’Edigio and Michael Griffiths aim to offer an ever-changing blackboard menu offering contemporary American BYOB cuisine using “seasonal ingredients from local urban farms” and “farmers’ freshest bounty.”

Helm South will be smaller than the original location and will serve smaller plates of food in a “less formal approach,” Griffiths told Philly.com. The second location is predicted to be open in mid-to-late April.
