Cat Café Could Actually Be a Thing in Fishtown or NoLibs

Ever had to bite, scratch and claw your way to the front of the line at your local Starbucks or en vogue coffee shop? Who better to accompany you on such an undertaking than a cat?

Kawaii Kitty Café is set to pounce on Philadelphia snd is targeting Fishtown and Northern Liberties (among a few other ‘hoods) as possible locations. It follows a newly popular cat café model where customers can come in to hang with—and possibly adopt—a feline after their cup of joe.

Kawaii is following the new, Japanese-inspired cat café trend gaining popularity the U.S. Owner Kristin Eissler told Philadelphia Business Journal she partnered with Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), whose no-kill policy was a factor in the partnership.

The café will attach a feline-friendly area from the main coffee-drinking area—for sanitary reasons, of course—as it displays 10 to 15 cats at a time provided by PAWS. “PAWS said whenever I adopt them out, they’ll have other ones ready to come in,” Eissler told the Journal.

Should she land on her feet—as cats always do—in Fishtown or NoLibs, Eissler is hoping for a 1,200 square-foot establishment to seat about 25 customers. Eissler will also be running an Indigogo campaign in July to continue funding her goal.

“There are so many artistic people,” she said. “Everyone loves cats and animals. Philly loves that art culture. I feel like I’m in with the underground arts culture right now. … It’ll be perfect.”
