Danny Garcia Opens Up New Store in Kensington

Add “entrepreneur” to boxer Danny Garcia’s résumé.

Hundreds of people braved the humidity and eventual downpour to attend the DSG store’s grand opening on Saturday.  The line to get in wound through the parking lot, but moved quickly with DJ Redz providing  the music and Danny’s father, Angel, providing free hot dogs, hamburgers and cold sodas to those in attendance.  Danny graciously signed autographs and posed for photographs with everyone. Pro boxer TJ Velasquez was also in attendance.store1

The boutique sells Danny’s own line of reasonably priced men’s and women’s sportswear and casual clothing: jackets, shirts, accessories, swim trunks and flip flops all emblazoned with the DSG logo. A baseball cap with Angel’s face is also available for $20.00. Located at 3731 Jasper Street in Kensington, the store is just a few blocks from where the boxer grew up. It is physically connected to Danny’s gym and the DSG barber shop. Between the three endeavors, Garcia employs more than 20 people from the neighborhood.store2

No word yet on Danny’s next fight. In March, he lost a close decision to Keith Thurman that was broadcast live on CBS. It was his first career professional loss, and Danny is surely looking for a rematch. Unfortunately, that is up to Thurman, who is reportedly injured and will be out the rest of the year following elbow surgery. But another world title match-up might be on the horizon.store3

According to Dan Ambrose at Boxingnews24.com:

“Errol Spence Jr. wants to take a stay busy approach against the highly ranked Danny Garcia while he waits for a much bigger unification match against Keith Thurman for later this year. Spence (22-0, 19 KO) will be back inside the ring in September or October in making his first title defense of his IBF welterweight title that he won on May 27 in stopping Kell Brook in the 11th round. Spence figures that Danny Garcia (33-1, 19 KOs) should want to fight him now because he’s got one of the 147 pound world titles in his possession…Now that Spence has beaten Brook and captured the IBF welterweight title, he now has the sufficient bait to potentially lure Garcia into fighting him.”

We will keep you posted when we hear from Danny’s camp.
