From a Blanket to a Business

“I love what I do and I want every client to know they are special,” said Diane Lawrence, owner of Knitting For God’s Kids.

Knitting For God’s Kids (KFGK) is a boutique in Port Richmond that specializes in handcrafted, personalized items mainly for women and children.

KFGK opened back in June after Lawrence took the leap of faith and invested all of her time into creating pieces for babies. The first piece she created was a beautiful baby blanket, but her collection has exploded since then.

Now, items in her store range from blankets to baby clothing and women’s shawls, hats and gloves.

Lawrence also creates pieces upon request.  Some customers ask Lawrence to match another article of clothing or create a special designed blanket, and Lawrence is always willing to take on the challenge.

These works are made from only the best materials shipped directly from Peru. The materials include baby alpaca, organic cottons, basic 100% cotton, angora and cashmere upon request.

“People deserve to know exactly what they’re getting,” said Lawrence. “And here, they’re going to get nothing but the best.”

Lawrence creates each piece in her store with her own personal touch because she knows knitting was her God-given talent and she did not want to see that go to waste.

“I wanted to have a company that would honor God in the marketplace. You can tell from the name of my business,” said Lawrence. “God has given me so much, so I felt as if it was time to give back.”

The most impressive part of Lawrence’s business is that she solely assembles each piece.

“Me, all my faith in God and a lot of prayer are what run this business,” said Lawrence. “This is what I was born to do.”

Although she runs the business herself, Lawrence has been mentoring a student.  “I eventually want my student to be able to contribute her pieces into the boutique,” said Lawrence.  It is her desire to be able to continue to share her talent and teach many other people her skill.

Lawrence also has been in touch with St. Adalbert’s about running an after school program on Mondays to teach kids how to knit. She has high hopes for this program because the children would then have something structured to do after school.

“I think children could gain a lot from being able to learn a new skill. There aren’t as many opportunities like this for children anymore. It’s so different compared to when I was younger,” Lawrence said.

Lawrence wants all her customers to know that personal quality is what she provides with all of her products and that customer service is of utmost importance. She is very enthusiastic about the work she has done and would love to see customers enjoy her pieces as well.

KFGK is located at 2607 East Allegheny Avenue in Port Richmond and is open on Wednesdays through Fridays from 10AM to 6PM and Saturdays from 10AM to 5PM. Come by and see some of the amazing works Lawrence has produced!
