Temple Forbids Hoverboards on Campus
Temple University students will be leaving their hoverboards at home this year. A statement issued on the university’s website stated that the popular holiday gifts are now forbidden on campus. They are not allowed to be used, charged or even stored anywhere on university property.
The statement was issued by James P. Creedon, Temple’s Senior Vice President for Construction, Facilities and Operations.
In the statement, Creedon says, “In light of recent hazards related to hoverboards, Temple University is prohibiting these devices on all university campuses, including in residence halls and academic buildings, unless or until the university determines that appropriate standards can be implemented to reduce associated safety and fire risks.”
While it was one of the most popular christmas gifts this year, the hoverboard does not actually ‘hover.’ They do, however, sometimes explode creating the fire risks Creedon mentions.
NBC 10 reported that Swagway LLC and Modell’s Sporting Goods, Inc. are the targets in a class action lawsuit that that was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Indiana because both the manufacturer and the retailer “failed to warn customers of the risk that hoverboards could ‘burst into flames’”
A statement from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, which is investigating hoverboard-related fires, will serve to inform consumers about the safety of the product.
