Two Brothers Convert Their Penchant for Alcohol into a Local Distillery
Brothers Matthew and Brian Quigley have opened Federal Distilling, a manufacturing company in Kensington that produces and distributes their own blend of alcohol known as Stateside Vodka, according to an ABC Action News report.
For three years prior, Matthew and Brian had been concocting alcoholic drinks in their parents’ basement. Their mother and father finally requested that they leave, at which point both brothers began looking for work at local distilleries and for an investor to finance their business venture. Clement Pappas, a local businessman, expressed a great deal of interest in the brothers’ proposition and ultimately decided to fund the project.
“We really saw that the craft spirit movement was taking off much like the craft beer movement is taking off,” Pappas told ABC’s Alicia Vitarelli, “but that vodka was largely being ignored in favor of whiskey and bourbons.”
After almost a year of refurbishment and renovation, Federal Distilling commenced operations at the intersection of Cecil B. Moore Avenue and Hancock Street and has now been producing vodka for two months. Stateside Vodka is currently being distributed to 10 stores (with the expectation of including an additional 10 to the dispensation list some time this month) and can also be found in more than 20 bars and restaurants. Matthew, the chief distiller, and Brian, who is head of sales, plan to open a tasting room this March as well.
“I don’t think there’s anything sexier out there than being a rock star or being a guy who makes alcohol,” Matthew told Action News.
